The opening ceremony of the new Zhou Yao insect museum was launched in Yinzhou District, Ningbo city of China’s eastern Zhejiang province on July 28, 2022.

Chen Jianping, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and expert of plant pathology, Zeng Xiaopeng, member of the leading Party members group and vice president of Zhejiang Association for Science and Technology (ZAST), and leaders of Ningbo Association for Science and Technology attended the opening ceremony.
Born in Yinxian County, Ningbo, Professor Zhou Yao (1912-2008) is a prestigious entomologist and founder of modern insect taxonomy in China. He devoted all his life to scientific exploration and made great achievements, enjoying a good reputation both at home and abroad.
With the aim to advocate his dedication to the motherland and the Spirit of Chinese Scientists, Zhou’s hometown Yinxian built Zhou Yao insect museum on the Bank of Dongqian Lake 26 years ago.
Recently the Yinzhou District Party committee and government built the new Zhou Yao insect museum in the second phase of Yinzhou Park, displaying Zhou’s collection of 3,000 plus insect specimens and a batch of precious insect hand paintings.

The museum is built as a fairyland with the largest number of butterfly exhibits in China by means of sound, light and 3D printing technologies. It is Asia's largest insect museum named after a scientist.
The newly established Zhou Yao insect museum has 2 floors, with a total construction area of 2,760 square meters and an exhibition area of 1,760 square meters.
The museum presents two parts in its exhibition, namely "Pioneer in entomology science” to tell Zhou Yao's life stories and summarize his scientific achievements, and "Insect world" to show an amazing nature.
With exhibitions and education programs the museum provides the public, especially youngsters, with a popular leisure space to obtain knowledge of biological diversity and beauty of science

At the opening ceremony, Zhou Yao insect museum was licensed national science education base and Zhejiang education base. The museum announced its route of the program of “Night tour” which was jointly launched by 11 famous museums and art galleries in Yinzhou District to extend their visit hour every Friday and Saturday since July 28, 2022. The participating units of the program would exhibit their most precious collections and develop diversified activities on site.
The newly established Zhou Yao insect museum will join hands with its peers in Yinzhou District, and develop various science education programs to advocate the Spirit of Chinese Scientists and enhance scientific literacy of Chinese citizens, told head of the museum to the reporter.
