At the invitation of the Kaifeng Association for Science and Technology (KAST), Henan University and the Affiliated High School of Henan University,

Prof. Yuan Yaxiang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and vice president of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) delivered a popular science lecture during the 11th national forum on mathematical culture which was held in Kaifeng City in central China’s Henan province.

In his lecture entitled “Endless joy of mathematics”, Prof. Yuan elaborated on mathematical principles which are behind magic, games and puzzles in daily life from a unique perspective with vivid examples and plain language.

Yuan’s lecture embodied scientific knowledge and practical methods. It inspired the enthusiasm of participating teachers and students to explore the mysteries of math.

Prof. Yuan earnestly answered the questions raised by the students, and encouraged them to aim high and study hard to serve the motherland with science.

Prof. Yuan cheered up young students to devote their lifelong love and passion to seeking the truth, thinking independently to solve practical problems and having the courage to question the authority.

Prof. Yuan works on nonlinear optimization, mainly on trust region algorithms and quasi-Newton methods.

He was elected academician of the CAS in 2021, and vice president of CAST in 2016.

He won the title of National Excellent Science and Technolgy Worker in 2005.

He was winner of National Natural Science Award of China in 2006, Math Prize of Science and Technology of Award of HO LEUNG HO LEE Foundation in 2016, and Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Prize for Distinguished Service to the Profession in 2017.
