Co-sponsored by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and Tianjin Municipal People's Government, and jointly organized by Nankai University, the Chinese Chemical Society (CCS), the Children and Youth Science Center (CYSC) of CAST, and the Tianjin Association for Science and Technology, the 54th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO 2022) opens in Tianjin in a hybrid form of online and on-spot from July 10 to 18, 2022.
Zhang Yuzhuo, vice president and chief executive secretary of the Secretariat of CAST, and academician of the CAE sends a video speech congratulating the convening of the 54th IChO.
The IChO is an annual contest for the world’s most talented chemistry students at the secondary school level. It tests contestants’ knowledge and skills in a laboratory practical exam and a written theoretical exam in 2 separate days.
The IChO exams cover domains of inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, structural chemistry, and analytical chemistry, aiming to cultivate contestants’ capability of solving real life problems and foster mutual understanding and friendship.
In his video speech congratulating the convening of the IChO 2022, Zhang Yuzhuo, vice president and chief executive secretary of the Secretariat of CAST, and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), noted that only serving the supreme social good can science and technology show beauty and charisma and be perfection. This year’s IChO will promote science to serve the goodness and encourage the participants to do open exchanges, and find talents in chemistry science and innovation.
Zhang added that as the largest organization of sci-tech professionals in China and co-organizer of the IChO, CAST looks forward to providing a contest of integrity and memorable experiences for all participants, and work together with the colleagues of other countries for the development of science and technology.
In his video speech welcoming the participants, Zhang Gong, senior engineer, mayor of Tianjin and co-chairman of the 54th IChO, briefed that Tianjin is the birthplace of China’s modern industry and the pilot city of China’s modern chemical research and industrialization, and nowadays Tianjin is making every effort to build itself a modern socialist metropolis in all respects.
Zhang hoped that Tianjin’s industrial foundation, research strength and open culture would appeal global young chemical talents to come to make innovation and start business.
Zhang hoped that the IChO 2022 could activate chemical reactions and foster free communication channels among global young chemists to make the world a better place.
Yao Jiannian, president of the CCS, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and executive chairman of the IChO 2022, said in his speech that 2022 is the "International Year of basic science for sustainable development" entitled by the United Nations (UN).
Yao noted that as a practical basic discipline, chemistry has made unparalleled contributions to the progress and development of human society in the past 200 years.
Yao added that it is believed that in the future, chemistry will continue to make greater contributions to the sustainable development of society and a better life for mankind.
