The 16th General Conference and 30th fellows gathering of The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries (TWAS) opens in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province on November 21, 2022.
Wan Gang, vice president of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and president of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), attended the opening ceremony and read President Xi Jinping's congratulatory letter.
Hou Jianguo, president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and vice president-elect for East and South-East Asia of the TWAS, Mohamed Hassan, president of the TWAS, Audrey Azoula, director-general of United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Huai Jinpeng, minister of education of China, Zhang Yuzhuo, secretary of the leading Party members group, vice president in charge of daily work, and chief executive secretary of the Secretariat of CAST, addressed the opening ceremony respectively.
Zhang Yuzhuo said in his address that President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter, putting forward hopes for enhancing openness, trust and cooperation to benefit the people with scientific advances, and encouraging sci-tech community to promote Global Development Initiative to achieve the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As the largest mass organization of sci-tech professionals in China, CAST will always stay committed to building a community with a shared future for humankind, and provide support for Chinese sci-tech professionals to reach consensus with global peers to advocate open science and innovation and jointly address global challenges including climate change and energy security.
Sponsored by the TWAS, and under the theme of "Basic sciences for evidence-based decision-making and sustainable development in the global South", the conference was organized by Zhejiang University with the support of CAST and the CAS, attracting 140 plus representatives from more than 20 countries, including China, Egypt, Australia, Pakistan, Brazil and Germany to participate.
Nearly 1,000 academic and scientific researchers around the world took part in the conference online.
Founded in 1983, TWAS is committed to promoting scientific research in developing countries. With nearly 1,400 fellows from more than 70 countries and regions, TWAS is an international sci-tech organization with broad influence.
