The annual meeting of the Belt and Road International Science Education Coordinating Committee was held online on November 20, 2021.
Wu Yueliang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and vice president of the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), Wu Xiangping, academician of the CAS, senior research fellow of the National Astronomical Observatories of the CAS (NAOC) and president of the China Association of Children’s Science Instructors (CACSI), together with 20 representatives from 13 countries and international organizations including Lee Yee Cheong, member of the United Nations Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development, Manzoor Hussain Soomro, president of the scientific organization of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Zainul Abedin, researcher of the Ministry of Science and Technology of Pakistan, Ganigar Chen, vice president of the National Science Museum of Bangkok, and Hatem Slimane, president of the Tunisian Association for the Future of Science and Technology, participated in the event.
The meeting heard and approved the work report 2021 of the Belt and Road International Science Education Coordinating Committee.
The meeting appointed Lee Yee Cheong as president of the committee with the term of presidency from 2021 to 2024, and Wu Xiangping, Manzoor Hussain Soomro, Ganigar Chen and Hatem Slimane as vice presidents.
The meeting approved Mohamed Jemni, director of the Information and Communication Technologies of the Arab League to join the committee as a new member.
As a practical measure to follow the initiative of the 1st World Conference on Science Literacy (WCSL 2018) and build up long-term effective work mechanism alongside the BRI countries, the Belt and Road International Science Education Coordinating Committee was launched by the Children and Youth Science Center (CYSC) of CAST in 2018.
3 years of efforts witnessed the members of the committee covering 25 units in 16 countries and 4 international organizations.
The committee is playing a more and more active role in promoting the development of science education alongside the BRI countries.
