WLF Teens in the Academy Forum: T Scientists Forum which is part of the 3rd World Laureates Forum was held at Shanghai International Convention Center on November 1, 2020.
WLF Teens in the Academy Forum is held at Shanghai International Convention Center on November 1, 2020.
Yang Xiongli and Ma Dawei, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Xie Youbai, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), Xu Zhenghe, fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineer attended the T Scientists Forum to share views with 55 young scientists from 17 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities at the event.
At the forum, 8 young scientists shared their gains in scientific inquiry and visions of science and future.
Xie Ruiqi from Chongqing No.11 Middle School put forward a small research issue analyzing the influencing factors of test scores.
He learned online courses by himself, then built a model of influencing factors and attributed weight proportions for each factor, among which the factor of "average extra time put in study in a week since the last large-scale exam" was the most notable.
Guo Qinsong from Shanghai United International School Pudong Campus demonstrates his snake-like robot.
"I brought here a snake-like robot," Guo Qinsong from Shanghai United International School Pudong Campus told the participants.
He noticed that farmers usually rely on personal experience to choose pesticide and determine usage amount which makes overuse of pesticide a big problem in rural areas.
Then, he used GoogleNet and MATLAB tools to find the solutions.
"It took me about two months to make the snake shuttle through the fields smoothly. The overuse problem was solved." introduced Guo with full confidence and a big smile on his face.
The other young scientists shared their stories with science, from the noise prevention to urban sports space planning, from carbon dioxide composing to photochromic coatings making, demonstrating three steps of scientific inquiry: finding problems -- thinking about problems -- finally solving problems.
The round table discussion session at WLF Teens in the Academy Forum
The following round table discussion session upsurged the happiness and joy of the forum.
55 participants were divided into 4 groups. Each group was led by an instructor to discuss hot issues on science and social development.
"How do we define innovation in scientific research? How does scientific discovery boost scientific research?" "How to find problems by using big data tools?" "What’s your opinion on the development of computer science?" "How neural network models reflect superiority of independent study?"...
The participating young scientists started from their own research priorities and sprang up spirited discussions for 40 minutes. They illustrated summary opinions in hand-painted posters at the end.

Later at the comment column, senior scientists weighed their performance and shared working tips with them.
Xu Zhenghe gives his comments.
We need multidisciplinary knowledge to decode nature, commented Xu Zhenghe, adding that he was quite sure that the young scientists are hope for the future by participating in the event.
Xie Youbai gives his comments.
Xie Youbai showed his happiness to see their interests and curiosity in science, saying that they are the future strength to boost China's high-quality and large-scale development.
Yang Xiongli gives his comments.
Yang Xiongli highly acclaimed their performance, and quoted Hegel's words "Respect authority and challenge authority at the same time" to encourage them to make courageous explorations in science.
Ma Dawei gives his comments.
Ma Dawei put forward requirements and expectations for them from perspectives of learning skills and research mentality. He hoped them attach importance to basic learning and keep patient in long journey of scientific inquiry. He welcomed the young friends to choose chemistry as their major and get committed to the cause.
55 young scientists participating in this forum are between the age of 15 to 18. They were selected from China's Ying Cai Ji Hua (also known as "Talent Program") and 5 science Olympiads by the Chinese Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and the Shanghai Association for Science and Technology.
