The 2019 Chinese Conference on Oncology opened in Chongqing on August 17, 2019.
Thirty-six academicians, 1,909 prominent Chinese and foreign experts and scholars of oncology, and over 30,000 oncology professionals gathered at the conference to discuss cancer prevention and treatment, interpret research frontiers and hotspots, promote the latest research achievements on cancer prevention and control, and build domestic and international platforms for exchanges and cooperation.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Wu Yongzhong, president of the Chongqing University Cancer Hospital.
Xu Yanhao, vice president of the China Association for Science and Technology(CAST), Qu Qian, deputy mayor of Chongqing, Zhang Zongyi, president of Chongqing University, Fan Daiming, president of the China Anti-Cancer Association, and Dr. Anil D'Cruz, president-elect of the Union for International Cancer Control(UICC), addressed the opening ceremony.
Xu Yanhao said in his speech that the conference, themed “Cancer Control – Win in Integration,” was significant as it had brought together Chinese oncology professionals to focus on research frontiers and hotspots at its high-level dialogues, academic exchange activities and science popularization activities.
He stressed that cancer knowledge popularization, like cancer prevention and treatment, is a heavy responsibility and has a long way to go.equal importance should be attached to both academic work and science popularization work..
He called on oncology professionals to work together and make new progress for the benefit of public health and the China Anti-Cancer Association to achieve leapfrog development and contribute to the building of a healthy China by drawing on its past experiences and pursuing innovation.
Qu Qian said that Chongqing would take the conference as an opportunity to strengthen academic, research, clinical and industry exchanges and cooperation with Chinese and foreign academicians and experts in the hope of further improving the innovative and life-saving ability of Chongqing’s oncology professionals.
This is part of Chongqing’s effort to implement the Healthy China Initiative, improve people’s health and enhance the life quality of cancer patients, Qu remarked.
After the opening ceremony, an award ceremony was held to present the 2019 Science and Technology Award and the Young Chinese Oncologist Award of the China Anti-Cancer Association.
The award ceremony was followed by eight keynote reports delivered by Jiang Guoliang, president of the Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center, and another seven experts.
The conference mainly consisted of 11 thematic sessions including the Chinese and Foreign Academicians Forum, the session on cancer and AI, and the session on cancer prevention and control in Belt and Road countries, and 77 special sessions including the sessions on gynecological cancer, blood cancer and targeted cancer therapies.
The conference also included a youth debate competition, a surgeons’ surgery competition, MDT case studies and presentations of excellent papers by young researchers.
Besides, there was a special session where academician Fan Daiming joined famous actress Xu Qing, famous actor Luo Jiaying and renowned TV host Cao Kefan to discuss the responsibility of medicine and the love of medical workers for patients.
The Chinese Conference on Oncology is the biggest and highest-level oncology gathering in China, also the most inclusive meeting in terms of the number of disciplines it covers. This year, it was sponsored by the China Anti-Cancer Association and organized by the Chongqing University Cancer Hospital and the Chongqing Anti-Cancer Association with support from the Chongqing Association for Science and Technology. It marked the first time the conference had been held in a western China city in its 20 years of history.
