The 60th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) and the 30th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) concluded in Bath, UK and Szeged, Hungary respectively on July 21, 2019. The China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) organized two teams to take part. All contestants won gold medals.

A total of 621 contestants from 112 countries and regions participated in the 60th IMO, with 52 gold medals, 95 silver medals and 155 bronze medals awarded. Led by professor Xiong Bin of East China Normal University, the Chinese team had 11 members, including six contests, who were Xie Boting, Yuan Zhizhen, Hu Sulin, Yu Ranfeng, Deng Mingyang and Huang Jiayu.
After fierce competition, Xie and Yuan got full marks, and all the six student contestants won golden medals. This marked the second time in eight years that all contestants of the Chinse team won gold medals. With a total score of 227, the Chinese team tied with the U.S. team for the top place of group performance, a record-high in recent years.

The 30th IBO attracted some 300 contests from 78 countries and regions. The four Chinese students, Peng Lingfeng, Tang Haoxuan, Meng Yu and Huang Yiyuan, all won gold medals and defended China’s top place in the gold medal tally. Peng and Tang also ranked No. 1 and 2 in the total score competition. The Chinese team was led by staff members of the School of Life Sciences, Peking University and the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
The 61st IMO and 31st IBO will be hosted by Saint Petersburg, Russia and Nagasaki, Japan, respectively in 2020.
